A thrilling in-state battle is set for Monday night in Columbia, Mo on ESPN. The defending National Champions Kansas Jayhawks recent play have them back in the national spot-light again. But they have to face their bitter in-state rival who is having their best season in 5 years, the Missouri Tigers. This is the first meeting between these two with the other set for March 1, just a week or so before the Big 12 tournament. Given both team's recent play, a win here for either team could be a huge physiological edge in the next regular season match-up as well as a potential conference tournament showdown.
Currently, Missouri is a 4 point favorite and the Total is 152
No. 21 Kansas is back in the polls for the first time since early December, extended its winning streak to eight after beating Oklahoma St on Saturday 78-67. Although Kansas remained undefeated in Big 12 play with two victories against unheralded rivals within its division, the Jayhawks came away from games against Nebraska and Colorado looking vulnerable. A poor first half at Nebraska forced Kansas to recover from a 13-point deficit to pull out a 68-62 victory. Then the Jayhawks collapsed in the second half against Colorado and barely held on for a 66-61 win, their 36th in a row at home. With a tougher schedule looming for the reigning national champions, some doubt exists whether Kansas can continue to keep pace with Oklahoma atop the Big 12. Kansas coach Bill Self acknowledged the second half against Colorado was one of the worst for his teams defensively in some time, especially since the Buffaloes made 66 percent of their shots. But rather than dwell on negatives, Self tried to center on the positive effects the close games could have as the Jayhawks face a stretch of three games in eight days, including trips to Baylor and Missouri. Expect Kansas to approach games against tougher opponents with more vigor, though it can ill afford to take any opponents lightly. The Jayhawks are prone to droughts if junior guard Sherron Collins struggles, sophomore center Cole Aldrich doesn't get touches and other long-range shooters are cold.
Missouri started the season hoping to secure its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2003. The Tigers, nearly unbeatable at home this season, are showing for the first time in a long time an ability to win away from their home floor. Now the Tigers might just chasing even loftier goals after knocking off Texas on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas. They won at Iowa St on Saturday 82-68 their record is now 20-4 on the season and gave the Tigers their best league start since they opened 7-1 in 2000. Missouri also has a victory over Baylor and who along with Texas, were the two teams many figured would contend for the Big 12 regular-season title when the year began. The Tigers sit alone in third place in the Big 12 standings, trailing only Oklahoma and Kansas. They'll have opportunities to gain ground on both teams when they play them head-to-head in the second half of the season. A week ago, Missouri coach Mike Anderson elected to insert F Leo Lyons back into the starting lineup for the Jan. 31 game against Baylor. "Instinct just told me," Anderson said of his decision, which proved fruitful as Lyons netted 30 points in the 89-72 romp. Lyons was suspended one game and came off the bench the next four following an arrest for several outstanding traffic violations. His play the rest of the way may determine how the Tigers season plays out.
The young Jayhawks have played much better of late on the road and are 4-3 SU and 4-2 ATS on the season. Missouri has won 15 consecutive home games dating back to a double-overtime win against Iowa State last season ... Those 15 straight home wins set a Mizzou Arena record and is the nation’s seventh longest home court winning streak. Last season Kansas swept the series over Missouri. In Columbia, the Jayhawks beat the Tigers 76-70 lead by future NBA player Mario Chalmers' 18 points. At home they breezed to a 90-71 victory over the Tigers. But this year's Kansas team is not veteran laden like the 07-08' squad and this is not the same Missouri team that finished last season 16-16.
