Hall-of-fame trainer Richard Mandella kept his horses in his barn. Although some of his horses were ready to run, Mandella decided to stay at Santa Anita.
Santa Anita’s racing office published a condition book for events from May 15 through May 24. The SoCal thoroughbred track hopes to run races every Thursday through Sunday.
Monday, May 25, Santa Anita runs a special Memorial Day card. The Memorial Day race card will include a couple of Grade 1 events.
The Great Race Place scheduled the Santa Anita Derby for Saturday, June 6. That’s Santa Anita’s most important Kentucky Derby prep race.
Churchill Downs’ opening day was May 16th.
The Kentucky Derby was supposed to happen on May 2.
Churchill will run the real Kentucky Derby on Saturday, September 5. On May 16, the Twin Spires opens their spring meet. Churchill runs live racing from Thursday through Sunday.
Like Santa Anita, the Twin Spires has a special Memorial Day card.
Churchill Downs’ closing day is June 27. On closing day, the U.S.’s most famous thoroughbred horse racing track runs four races worth a cumulative $900,00.
Because the Twin Spires rescheduled Derby Day, the Grade 1 Stephen Foster has become Churchill’s featured race during the 2020 spring meet.
